With restrictions easing and shops and restaurants open, we should all be wearing face coverings when in a public space, particularly indoors. The virus can spread through moisture droplets in the air and wearing a mask reduces the risk of catching and spreading the virus. Here's a really simple step by step tutorial to make your own face mask at home.
Step 1: Find your supplies.
You'll need:
Step 2: Cut out your mask shape, a rectangle. Fold in the top and bottom to create a hem, leaving enough space to slide through the wire afterwards and sew along the edges.
Step 3: Cut your wire to the width of the mask. Bend in the edges of the wire and slide it through the top of the mask.
Step 4: Create pleating on the mask so it fits snuggly to your face. This is easier than you might think. All you need to do is fold the top and bottom of the mask in on itself from the sides and only stitch the edges.
Step 5: Fold in the side of the mask and sew them down. Try to sew around the wire to hold it in place (if the wire is the correct length this should happen automatically.
Step 6: Measure and cut your elastic to size. Sew each end to the top and bottom of the mask.
And voila! You have a perfect mask ready to protect you and those around you! You can also pop it in the washing machine at 40 degrees after each use. Easy peasy!
